THE ROSEDALE CONSERVATION PROJECT
Interested in farming or conservation?
by Marjolaine Forest article from Substack

The Rosedale Farm Conservation Project, which became a Whitemud Watershed responsibility in the 1970s, is a 3/4 section Farm situated near Eden, Manitoba. This large farm entails the Rosedale Farm Trail, within the (Rural Municipality) RM of Rosedale conservation region. The project began in 1960 and was used as a demonstration featuring effective farming practices as solutions to evident land deterioration. The issues that were addressed were of land erosion and flooding, affected by land clearing and farming being the root cause. The solutions within the project were focused on sustainable land by using minimum tillage practices, crop rotations to maintain soil health, to protect the area's natural resources with the goal of agricultural conservation.

What did the men and women who were farming in the 1950s and previous decades see as devastation on the land and experience economically?

Was this a social issue, not just for the people who were farming the land, but for residents of the Riding Mountain region and tourism?

What happened, and how extreme were the situations environmentally on flora and fauna, and the impact on land and water dwellers?

What was it internally in the hearts and minds of the farmers that they knew something was wrong and had to change by 1960 with the Rosedale Farm Conservation Project?

Sometimes we take things too far, and it gets out of hand, that said some things are not worth repeating. A guide to alleviate the pressure on the people who are farmers of today and for the future.

Caring for the land and integrating solutions is an age old human endeavour. One could clearly see the results of failures and the amazing ingenuity of the last 100 years, where we today have all ultimately been benefactors. There is no time to regress, and there are opportunities at hand. Humans are forward thinkers. We delight in the new vistas and horizons of a beautiful morning, especially for those who are in nature. For every day we wake, at times with having to go through hardships, tragedy and others, we know intuitively the sun shall rise again, and the moon will continue to give us the ebb and flow of life.

THE WHITEMUD WATERSHED WEBSITE
The Whitemud Watershed Conservation District strives at managing water and land conservation within its watershed.

For those of us who are living on the land for the most part, I think we can say to the lay people, city folk and all others, please know that the environments of today are much better in many regions of Canada and that of the world. To know this is to take part with your feet on the ground and to take a closer look of the grandeur and vista of possibilities at hand.

This CONSERVATION page is highlighting evidence of systems that have been in place for decades and systems that do work for the benefit of the land, land and water dwellers, the people, visitors, tourists, the outdoorsman, foragers, and for the hard working people who choose to be farmers.

I am not saying all is absolutely well, and that there is no room for continued conservation efforts. There is always room for growth.
